Setting the Style Agenda: The 5 Steps of Visual Merchandising at M&S
We caught up with Ryan Powell, Deputy Store Manager for Visual Merchandising, to find out more about how the Visual Merchandising team create bold, fashion-forward spaces in our stores.
At M&S, we’re all about creating exciting, inspiring stores where people love to shop. And behind every standout display is a talented Visual Merchandising (VM) team, transforming our latest viral fashion collections into eye-catching displays that stop customers in their tracks.
We caught up with Ryan Powell, Deputy Store Manager for Visual Merchandising, to find out more about how the Visual Merchandising team create bold, fashion-forward spaces in our stores.
"I started my career as a Visual Merchandiser, and it’s still one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had. VM is about creativity, problem-solving, and, as I like to say, ‘creating magic.’ Seeing your work come to life and inspiring customers never gets old."
Our goal is simple – to be known for style, quality, innovation, and must-have products. Whether you’re styling mannequins in the latest trends or curating a window display, you’ll be part of shaping the style conversation in retail.
Let me share with you just how we do it with our approach what we call “The 5 Steps of VM”.
Step 1: Plan Your Layout
It all starts with smart planning and creating layouts that are easy for customers to navigate and highlight key areas for maximum impact. It’s hands-on work – moving fixtures, rearranging equipment, dressing and undressing the mannequins. We get stuck in, sleeves rolled up, always balancing creativity with practicality.
In fashion, things move fast. That’s why we need people who can think on their feet, work at pace and keep pushing the boundaries of style.
Step 2: Create the Customer Journey
From entrance to checkout, we design a journey that keeps customers engaged – using focal points like mannequin groupings and eye-catching displays to inspire them along the way.
Being fashion-forward means staying ahead of the trends. We adapt quickly, showcase seasonal updates, and ensure that everything, from bold prints to wardrobe essentials, reflects our ambition to lead in style.
Step 3: Visual Merchandising
This is where the real magic happens. Using the guidelines, we bring our products and campaigns to life. Whether it’s layering new collections, creating standout window displays, or setting up engaging in-store features, our goal is to deliver that “wow” moment for every customer.
Visual Merchandising is a critical part of putting M&S on the map as a style leader. We tell it as it is, learn from experience, and continuously improve to drive sales. And because fashion never stands still, we love bold ideas and encourage our teams to innovate every day.
Step 4: Styling
Styling is what brings everything together. From seasonal must-haves to timeless classics, we dress mannequins and curate displays that inspire customers and showcase the best of our collections.
We’re also shaping the style conversation beyond the shop floor. By collaborating with celebrity influencers like Sienna Miller and Bella Freud, we bring exclusive collections to life. Our VM teams are a huge part of these campaigns, ensuring our stores reflect the style and tone of these high-profile launches.
Success in VM at M&S means being truly passionate about fashion. You’ll need a sharp eye for style, a keen sense of what’s trending, and the ability to present products in a way that excites and inspires. Whether you dream of a career in styling or leadership, M&S offers endless opportunities for growth.
Step 5: Point of Sale (POS)
The final step is POS – the signage and décor that guide customers through the store and highlight key offers. Done well, it elevates the look and feel of the store while helping customers shop with ease.
Like everything else we do, teamwork is vital. We collaborate with colleagues across the business, always putting M&S first and making the best decisions for our customers.
What We Look for in a Visual Merchandiser
At M&S, we want VMs who are more than just creative – we’re looking for people who:
- Stay curious and ask questions: Get close to customers and colleagues, explore trends, and always aim to improve.
- Love fashion and style: You’ll need to be fashion-forward, with a strong sense of style and an eye for detail.
- Are bold and ambitious: Make confident decisions, take ownership, and push boundaries.
- Stay resilient: Retail is fast-paced, so being adaptable and staying positive under pressure is key.
