Naomi Jones: Being myself at work and beyond
Naomi Jones has worked at M&S since she was 17, building her career across stores and now as a Regional People Partner. In this article, she reflects on what Pride means to her, how being out at work has shaped her confidence, and why M&S is a place where LGBTQ+ colleagues can grow and be themselves.
Naomi Jones has spent her whole career at M&S. What started as a fixed-term Christmas role at 17 turned into weekend shifts through university and eventually a full-time career in retail management. Now, as a Regional People Partner, Naomi supports colleagues across two regions in the Midlands on the West Division.
“I loved the brand so much, I just never left,” she says.
Naomi has been in a same-sex relationship for more than two years. For her, Pride is about embracing difference in a world that often expects sameness. “It’s about respecting those who came before us and supporting the next generation. It’s a celebration of how far we’ve come and a reminder of how far we still have to go.”
Since coming out, Naomi says she’s grown both personally and professionally. “I can truly be myself inside and outside of work, and that’s had a big impact on how I show up in my role.”
She’s proud to work for a business that supports and celebrates difference. “The LGBTQ+ colleague network is a safe space. It’s helped me learn how to be a better ally to others in the community including people whose identities are different from mine.”
This year, Naomi joined colleagues at Birmingham Pride for the first time and will be getting involved in local events in South Wales, where she lives. She’s also been sharing how she and her colleagues are celebrating on social media. “Our Store Managers have really supported the Pride activity,” she says. “It’s great to see so many colleagues getting involved to truly represent the inclusive values of our business.”
One of the things Naomi values most is the support she’s had from her line managers over the years. “I’ve worked in regions far from home. My line managers have been super supportive in ensuring I have great balance between my job and ensuring quality time with my partner and family. I’ve always been open about that and I’ve always been supported.”
For LGBTQ+ people considering a career at M&S, Naomi is clear: “You’ll be supported here. There’s space to grow, to contribute and to be yourself. I’m different but that doesn’t affect how I do my job. M&S celebrates who you are, the role you play and what you bring to the business.”
