20 years of Marks & Start: Umay's story

Umay Nadeem from our Pudsey store shares her experience of Marks & Start and how the programme helped her find her confidence.

I come from a loving family and was the first to attend university - achieving a first class degree! But my struggles were not academic. Throughout my life, I’ve struggled with my mental health and the challenges that come with being neurodivergent. Accessing and going to a job interview - let alone starting a career - felt impossible.

Three years ago, I didn’t know where to start with getting the support I needed to get into the world of work. Fast forward to now, and you can find me serving our customers on the Beauty counters of our Pudsey store. That’s all down to being part of Marks and Start – M&S’ employability scheme run in partnership with The King’s Trust.

Looking back, I came to the programme in need of confidence. The King’s Trust offered me support I didn’t even know I needed, helping not only to build my confidence but, perhaps most importantly, helping me to start to believe in myself.

The King’s Trust gave me coaching on how to prepare and apply for Marks and Start. For the first time ever, I felt like I could do it. I got the job, have made friends, and I’m now pursuing my dream of becoming an author too. And it all started with being given that first chance.

For me, Marks and Start wasn’t just a programme – it was a lifeline. It’s about giving young people the chance to change their lives, find purpose, and contribute to society. That’s why I’m so delighted that M&S is committing to helping 2,000 more people into work via Marks and Start over the next three years.

Today, I’m thriving in my job, building connections and meaningful relationships. I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without Marks & Start - it has changed my life and helped me find my purpose.

Marks and Start opened up so many opportunities not just for me, but for over 12,000 young people over the last 20 years. If you or anyone you know would benefit from the programme, you can find out more on our website here or apply directly here. Today could be the start of a journey to everything that once seemed impossible.
