The next generation of M&S: Retail Leaders Graduate, Gregor Munro

Ready to run your own store in less than 12 months? The M&S Retail Leaders Graduate Programme is designed to give you the skills and experiences you need to succeed. Meet Gregor Munro, a Retail Leaders Graduate who’s thriving in this dynamic environment.

From getting hands-on with day-to-day operations to inspiring and coaching his colleagues, Gregor's journey is a testament to the exciting opportunities at M&S.

Here, Gregor shares his journey so far and his advice for graduates and school leavers considering the M&S early careers programmes.

Why did you originally apply for the graduate scheme at M&S?

I applied for the Retail Leaders Graduate Programme because I have a passion for the industry and serving customers to the very highest standard. I was working in retail before graduating from university so I wanted to take that to the next level by combining my academic knowledge with my professional experience. I’ve always enjoyed shopping at M&S and I understood what it stands for as a brand – quality, service and innovation - so it felt like the natural next step.

You’re now 9 months into the programme. What’s been the most eye-opening thing that you’ve learnt about the business so far?

What has amazed me most about M&S is how many people are working towards the same goal. Everyone has a crucial part to play, no matter how big or small. It’s really energising to work in an environment like that where we all win together.

I came into the role expecting to develop my retail leadership skills, which has certainly happened. But I underestimated the impact I’d have on others by coaching and mentoring my team. Having the opportunity to lead and develop a team is pretty unique in a graduate role and just shows the level of accountability we’re given from day one. Seeing that impact daily and developing over time, along with the friends I’ve made, has been incredibly rewarding and one of my favourite parts of the job.

What do you enjoy most about working for M&S, and what keeps you motivated in your role?

I love the fast-paced nature of working in retail at M&S. No two days are the same and that’s what really motivates me every day. We’re all genuinely passionate about delivering the very best service for our customers.

The standards and expectations here are very high but I love the challenge!

How has M&S supported your career development and progression within the company?

M&S has been incredibly supportive of me throughout my time in the business. I have multiple points of contact from across the business who are all invested in my development and success. If I need help, I know that I can go to any one of them whenever I need to. Their support has been invaluable to my progression, confidence and success.

What is your proudest career moment at M&S so far?

I feel proud to see how far I’ve come in such a short time. Nine months into the role, I know that I still have so much to learn but seeing the progress I’ve made already and being recognised for it is really satisfying. I’ve already been given key leadership responsibilities in my store which makes me feel really honoured and recognised for my hard work.

What makes M&S a special place to work?

The support you receive from everyone, regardless of their role or area of the business, makes M&S special. I have felt welcome and completely free to be myself from day one.

There’s no such thing as a ‘silly question’ here and everyone is more than willing to spare their time to see you do well. This makes me want to reciprocate that knowledge and support to anyone who comes to me for help.

What would you say to someone thinking of applying for the M&S Retail Leaders Graduate Scheme?

Absolutely go for it - you won’t regret it! Like any new job, it can be challenging at times, but the rewards are immense. I’ve learned so much about the retail industry, the business, and myself already. My advice is to use the early stages to make mistakes and ask questions; it’s the best way to learn.
