Our hiring process – FAQs

In Store

What are the application and interview processes?

The application takes about 45 minutes. You’ll need:

  • Personal details (including your National Insurance number)
  • Right to work documents
  • Your availability to book an interview slot

Your interview will be held in store and is your chance to see if M&S is right for you, while allowing our managers to get to know you. If you’re interested in multiple roles at the same store, you only need to apply once but you should discuss the other roles you’re interested in during your interview. If you applied unsuccessfully for a similar role within the last six months, please wait until this period ends before applying again.

What shifts will I work and what can I expect?

Shift patterns are listed in the job advert but may change to meet store needs. Expect early starts, busy periods, and a fast-paced environment focused on great customer service. Check out our In-Store page to get a real feel for the role.

What if I need support during the application?

We want everyone to have the chance to shine. If you feel you’d benefit from any support or reasonable adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process, just let us know when you apply. Please share what you need so we can support you best.

How should I prepare for my interview?

Visit an M&S store to see our teams in action. Think about why you want to work here and the skills you bring. We want to see your passion for retail, customer focus, and positive attitude. Don’t worry about having all the answers, we value potential and eagerness.

What if I have questions about my application or interview?

We aim to interview as many candidates as possible, but due to high demand, we can’t guarantee an interview for everyone. If no slots are currently available, check back regularly as we’re adding more all the time. You can also apply for a different role, and your application details will be saved.

If you’ve already booked an interview but can’t attend, please cancel using the link in your invite. Rescheduling is limited, so we can’t promise a new slot. Please direct any application status questions to RetailRecruitment@marksandspencer.com.

Support Centres

What are the application and interview processes?

The process varies by role but usually starts with submitting your CV and answering some initial questions. If shortlisted, you may have one or more interviews (in person or virtual) and possibly task-based exercises or presentations. Each role is unique so our Talent Acquisition team will clearly explain what to expect as you progress.

What are the working hours and what can I expect?

The job description will specify the required working hours. For our Support Centre roles, we operate a hybrid working model which is typically three days in the office and two from home, though this can vary by team and operational demand. Expect a fast-paced, collaborative environment focused on delivering impact and innovation.

What if I need support during the application?

We’re committed to supporting you throughout recruitment. Tell us about any adjustments you need during your application so we can help you perform at your best.

How can I prepare?

Spend time researching our business and, most importantly, visiting our stores. Be ready to discuss your experience and expertise clearly and confidently. If your process includes tasks or presentations, we’ll provide guidance in advance. We look for problem solvers and people who are obsessed about customer service, quality and innovation.
