ABOUT THE BUSINESS
Marks and Spencer are a unique British heritage brand with a history of ‘firsts’ and there has been quite a revolution happening inside our International online teams. As we look to introduce M&S to a global audience, we are seeking out additional channels to complement our 35+ International direct to consumer websites. These include partner run D2C sites and marketplaces, as well as broader multi-channel digitally enabled touchpoints. With several large franchise partner and joint venture businesses in our network, all focused on capturing digital opportunities, we are backing this shift with a new function.
Our International online business is being invested in heavily and the results are starting to show as we outgrow competitors. We have a new team in place who share some impressive International experience and have created a clear strategy which will deliver ambitious goals. ABOUT THE ROLE
After a period of sustained growth, this is an exciting new role sitting within the International department. Reporting into Head of Growth Strategy and working across functions, they will deliver ecommerce revenue growth in partnership with our International franchisees and joint ventures.
The successful candidate should have hands-on experience working within D2C eCommerce, multi-channel retail or a digitally focused consulting background. The individual will be expert in driving results in a commercial partnership, inspiring support through thought leadership and driving delivery through joint roadmap development and performance management. They will be able to work under their own initiative to deliver stretching results and relish the challenge of scaling a new business opportunities for M&S.
Grow sales & profit: Build and deliver annual operating plans driving retail sales whilst maximising operating profit. Co-create supporting activity with International partners to deliver against our internal targets. You will be responsible for weekly/monthly/annual channel performance, defining KPIs, tracking progress and delivering against them.
Insight: You will conduct partner assessments and diagnostics as well as benchmarking against M&S and global competitors to identify opportunities.
Devise and deliver strategy: Using insights, shared best practices and your experience, you will guide the development of partner digital strategies in partnership with market leadership. These will be wide ranging from digital marketing, to onsite experience, to post purchase operations. With plans developed you will turn to delivery. You will be relentless in pursing new opportunities and seeing them through to execution.
Build winning partnerships: Implement and deliver growth orientated account management with key International partner teams. Maximising value from every interaction with our partners will be key, enabling you to develop win-win commercial terms on an enduring basis. This will include defining formats and cadence of routine and ad-hoc partner interactions focused on digital growth.
Scale a business: Work closely with cross-functional teams both internally and with partners (e.g. C&H/Food Product, IT, Operations, Marketing, Finance) to define requirements and enable delivery of them. You will champion the needs of our digital partners internally and ensure robust practices are embedded across the business.
Champion digital acceleration: You will be knowledgeable on all aspects of digital retail and will enthuse those around you with case studies, best practice, and playbooks. You will be excited by M&S’ digital transformation and be driven to contribute to it.
You are genuinely passionate about digital channels and the opportunities they provide brands to grow. You can hold your own in a variety of activities from detailed planning to partner management. You are curious, with a desire to constantly learn and improve yourself, and a proactive mindset.
Your skills and experience will include:
• Demonstratable hands-on experience of growing digital sales channels, (with international & multi-channel experience a plus)
• Being commercially astute and comfortable with data driven decision making, often in an ambiguous context
• Broad cross functional eCommerce experience. You will be able to hold discussions on digital topics but know when you need to call in the advice of an expert.
• You will be an individual contributor who is able to make things happen through other teams and external partner businesses
• Being a confident communicator who can convey ideas and points of view in a compelling and engaging manner
• You maintain deep industry knowledge, and a well-founded opinion on future trends, and are willing to share this far and wide across our partner network
• Able to work calmly under pressure, and accustomed to delivering time-sensitive activity on balance with our longer term, strategic deliverables
• Able to work autonomously in their area, whilst able to build great working relationships with many stakeholders.
• Able to see business problems from other functional viewpoints and drive practical commercial outcomes
• Experience of Indian, Russian or MENA eComm markets a plus
