Department vision Digital & Data

"We’re working to make M&S the most data-driven, customer-centric, and digitally-led omnichannel retailer on the planet. Data underpins our business strategy and will become more critical to M&S as customers increasingly expect a digital experience. Early careers colleagues are essential to ensuring we are set up for success. We look to you to be hungry to learn and ready to make an impact, contributing your own ideas and perspective. By being curious and bold enough to challenge, I know you can make your mark on our digital journey."

Jeremy Pee, Chief Digital & Data Officer

UX Graduate Programme 2023

Want to build a legacy you’ll look back on with pride? Join the creative, digital and commercial legends of tomorrow on our most innovative grad scheme yet. Intentionally designed to help you shape the fast-moving world of retail, it’s a masterclass in technical training, structured mentorship, and 360-feedback.

Our UX Team comprises designer and researchers whose role is to put the customers at the centre of what we do, work with the multi-discipline Product teams to discover, design and deliver the best shopping customer experiences and services across our website and apps, for customers at home, out and about, and in our M&S stores.

Our skills vary from ethnographic studies, accessibility, customer journey mapping, interaction design, branding and user interface design, building our design system, working with data, and deep collaboration across disciplines.

Knowing and understanding our customers is a vital part of providing the right experiences for them. We do user research and collaborate with various Customer Insights teams across M&S to make sure our customers are always in mind. This changes over time, as people, society, and technology changes. User research is a key part at the start of project, which continues through the design process and lifecycle of the product or service. Working with the rest of the UX Team, we undertake our own research, as well as working with specialist research agencies.

Product Designers at M&S work as part of a multi-discipline squads, and we start with understanding our customers (working with our UX Research colleagues), as well as ensuring we understand the commercial and technical drivers and constraints. Our remit covers everything from working out how Sparks members activate and manage their offers, get the best personalised recommendations, pay for food in store on their phone, and our international customers buying from our flagship M& site across the globe.

You will create information architectures for digital, navigation structures, content models, user journeys, screen flows and maps, and user interfaces that support a great customer experience.

To be considered for this role, you may come from either a design or research degree. We're looking for graduates of user experience design, graphic design, or other design degree which included design process rigour and positive outcomes for people. For those who want to explore a more research based role, we're keen to talk to you if you come from a psychology, anthropology, or other research-based and human-facing degree that includes an aspect of statistical analysis

Application Guidance

Legends seize the chance to use their strengths every day. That’s why we’re looking to see what makes you tick through the following assessment stages:

  1. An online assessment taking approximately 45 minutes, focusing on your individual strengths
  2. An on-demand video interview
  3. A final assessment stage; either at an assessment centre attended alongside peers, or a final interview

We’ll support anyone who requires reasonable adjustments to their application process – just let us know before the assessments start.

Some technical programmes may ask you to complete a short numerical reasoning test or a coding assessment. And most of our assessments are untimed, but we’ll make you aware of any timed elements in advance.

As a tip, avoid overly rehearsing your responses, especially for your video interview. We want you to be bold, be different, and be you.
