Commercial Finance Analyst – Franchise

Summary

Our franchise stores play a distinct role in the M&S store portfolio. They allow us to serve customers in their convenience missions across multiple channels where we would otherwise have limited access, principally in travel locations, petrol forecourts, service stations and hospitals.

This is a unique time to join the Franchise team, and you’ll have multiple exciting opportunities to influence growth across both existing and new partnerships. We also need to protect and drive our core business, with Covid-19 having impacted on many of the channels that we serve. Optimising trading opportunities, profitability and cash in the ‘new normal’ will therefore be a key focus of your role.

About the role

We are looking for a commercially minded super star Analyst to support the achievement of these objectives. You will be responsible for:

  • Delivering trading analysis to provide insights to the Franchise team on opportunities to improve trading performance
  • Managing franchise profitability down to operating costs and identify opportunities to improve cash and the franchise operating margin
  • Setting up the reporting and tracking of KPIs for new business opportunities
  • Implementing continuous improvement opportunities such as the automation of planning and reporting
  • Working with the Franchise commercial team to optimise the financial performance of the Franchise channel. Use data driven insight to challenge, identify risks and opportunities, propose solutions and hold to account to deliver
  • Analysing partner, product, promotions and event profitability, working with Franchise Commercial Managers and Space, Range & Display to propose opportunities to maximise sales and profit
  • Building further capability to explain the drivers of gross profit margin, including partner mix, sales mix, selling price and cost price
  • Building and review Budgets and Forecasts and own the latest outturn. Provide early visibility of risks and opportunities and model scenarios as required
  • Analysing operating costs, namely logistics, to identify opportunities to improve the franchise operating margin and cash
  • Creating KPI’s and develop reporting and governance for new business initiatives within Franchise. Conduct analysis to review success, identify potential risks and opportunities for improvement
  • Implementing continuous improvement opportunities such as the automation of planning and reporting. This includes driving the enhancements within the new Financial Planning and Reporting tool (BOARD) to ensure fit for use in Franchise, manage roll out with our business partners and ongoing management
  • Preparing adhoc analysis for the Franchise commercial team, often dealing with ambiguity rather than facts
  • Being a key contact for our Franchise partners to support with partner queries
  • Working closely with our Franchise Finance Analyst in the BSC to ensure strong control of the P&L, balance sheet and cash and manage financial risk
  • Supporting delivery of the month end close process and be able to articulate performance with a commercial lens
  • Working with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, with involvement across trading, retail operations, buying, new business, property and supply-chain

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Qualified Accountant – CIMA/ACCA/ACA/CA
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Business appraisal and analysis
  • Management accounts
  • Experience of managing P&L, balance sheet and cash would be helpful
  • Experience of commercial business partnering
  • Ability to communicate with impact to senior management, internal and external business stakeholders and wider finance teams
  • An understanding of sales to gross profit
  • Self-starter and strong initiative essential
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity
  • Quick learner, enthusiastic and solution driven
  • Experience of a franchise business model
  • Experience within a Retail Finance / FMCG / Manufacturing / Supply Chain environment
  • Good commercial understanding of the business and market
  • Finance Systems (SAP & Business Intelligence)
