About the programme

What you’ll be doing

You'll start with a four-month placement in one of our stores, gaining first-hand insight into our customers, colleagues and business. From there, you'll complete a series of rotations designed to give you an elevated understanding of our online operations.

Working with different teams on a variety of projects, you'll learn how products are presented, promoted and traded online. And you’ll get to combine commercial thinking, customer insight, data and innovation to help shape how millions of customers digitally discover, shop and engage with M&S.

What it takes to succeed

Curiosity and ambition. That’s what you need. We're looking for future leaders who are passionate about our products, excited by e-commerce and ready to make a difference to customers. And it’s not about having a specific degree. What matters most is a ‘give it your all’ mindset, a motivation to learn and a hunger for delivering better online experiences.

Alongside that, you'll thrive if you can:

  • think boldly and learn quickly
  • show initiative and deliver at a fast pace
  • work with data to identify trends
  • balance customer needs with commercial priorities.

Where it could lead

This programme is about developing the future senior leaders of M&S. It means the experiences, skills and networks you'll build will amplify your career and prepare you for big-impact roles across our business.

You'll finish the programme in a permanent role in our online teams. From there, you’ll continue developing towards increasingly senior opportunities and then leadership positions, helping to shape the future of Fashion, Home and Beauty at M&S.

Why Fashion, Home and Beauty at M&S?

Our products spark trends and start conversations all over the UK. Making this one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving areas of our business.

As we continue to grow online, we're investing in talented people who can think differently, challenge convention and help us transform the way we serve customers.

It means you’ll be joining a business that combines iconic products, ambitious growth and a culture that encourages collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.

Your career path

Big ambitions. Real responsibility. Future leadership. This programme will give you the elevated skills and knowledge for a long-term career in Fashion, Home and Beauty, equipping you to influence without authority, drive change and solve complex challenges.

Once you’ve completed the programme, this is the kind of career path you could take.

Trading Assistant

Build your understanding of how an online retail business trades day to day. You'll support the delivery of trading and content plans, learn how customers shop online, and use insight and data to help improve performance and customer experience.

Assistant Trading Manager

Develop your commercial and digital trading expertise by managing key customer journeys and trading activities. You'll use data to identify opportunities, optimise onsite experiences, and work with teams across buying, merchandising, marketing and technology to drive growth.

Online Category Manager

Take ownership of the online performance and strategy for a category. You'll balance customer needs with commercial priorities, lead trading plans, and use customer insight, data and market trends to unlock growth opportunities.

Head of Online Trading

Lead the online performance and customer experience for a major area of the business. You'll set strategic direction, shape future capabilities, and bring together trading, content, analytics and technology teams to deliver sustainable growth and exceptional customer experiences.

Being an in-person business

We're at our best when we're close to customers, and for many of us at M&S, that means working in store every day.

To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected. It also means we can solve problems as soon as they arise, learn and grow as a team, build trust, and get closer to our colleagues.

Learning & support

Your development is our priority at M&S. We’re committed to helping you grow and aim higher every day. You’ll benefit from a structured programme that includes mentoring, on-the-job training, and opportunities to solve real challenges. This hands-on experience will be instrumental in building a long-term career in the Food industry.

We believe in being bold and ambitious, so if we see that you can reach your potential faster, we’ll provide the tools and opportunities to make it happen. However, the person who will drive this development is you. With our support, we want you to own and take charge of your growth. Your proactive approach and commitment to learning will be key to your success.
