How We Hire

Everyone is welcome at M&S. No exceptions. It’s your background, abilities and differences that make you, uniquely you. And when you’re part of M&S, that individuality has the potential to make waves.

About the role

This section tells you all you need to know about the position and its responsibilities, outlining everything we hope to see in a successful candidate.

All the details

As part of the M&S Software Engineering team, you’ll be joining a well-loved historic brand, working on solutions that serve millions of loyal customers and thousands of colleagues. With ethical values that run right through the company’s core and technology leaders who truly understand software engineers and engineering, it’s an exciting time as we redefine ourselves into a digital-first, engineering-led organisation, where the quality of our engineering team is a key differentiator.

We are seeking a passionate Engineering Manager to support our Web Experience organisation through a pivotal transformation period. You’ll play a central role in modernising the M&S online shopping journey, including leading teams responsible for our homepage, navigation, platform foundations, and the re-platforming of our basket and checkout journeys. You’ll help shape how millions of customers interact with M&S every day, guiding teams through high-impact technical initiatives and fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and engineering excellence.

Working as an equal partner with Product and Delivery, you will lead empowered, multidisciplinary engineering teams, designing, building, releasing, and maintaining innovative solutions that solve meaningful customer-facing problems. You will help drive a culture where engineers grow, take ownership, and do the best work of their careers, supported by an experienced leadership group and a modern engineering environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead, mentor, and support engineering teams across multiple areas of our Web Experience platform (Arrive & Discover, Web Enablement, and Buy).

  • Build a culture of growth, accountability, psychological safety, and continuous learning.

  • Empower engineers at all levels, ensuring clear expectations, coaching for progression, and enabling individuals to take on meaningful technical challenges.

  • Oversee delivery across several product areas simultaneously, balancing priorities, managing dependencies, and ensuring alignment across teams working on the homepage, navigation, campaigns, platform foundations, basket, and checkout.

  • Ensure teams ship effectively while maintaining clarity, strong communication, and smooth stakeholder collaboration across Product, UX, Payments Experience, and other engineering domains.

  • Establish lightweight, adaptive ways of working and automated delivery mechanisms that empower teams to optimise flow, minimise friction, and operate reliably at scale.

  • Guide technical discussions, help shape architecture, and support teams through complex initiatives such as the evergreen stack migration, registered checkout re-platforming, and new payment component integrations.

  • Drive alignment across teams and engineering community, helping to prioritise technical roadmaps alongside commercial goals.

  • Champion best practice engineering, modern ways of working, and a pragmatic approach to technical decision-making.

  • Ensure engineering teams uphold high standards of quality, performance, and system reliability.

  • Support teams as they own and operate their services, embedding a strong DevOps mindset.

  • Remove blockers, resolve issues, and influence continuous improvement across engineering practices.

Who You Are

  • A strong people leader with excellent interpersonal skills and a track record of helping engineers grow.

  • Experienced in designing and steering the adoption of practices that strengthen delivery flow and organisational alignment.

  • Skilled in navigating complex stakeholder landscapes and aligning cross-functional teams around shared objectives.

  • Confident in challenging constructively, driving decisions, and moving teams forward even in ambiguous or pressured environments.

  • Resilient, proactive, and able to bring a positive outlook when working in fastmoving or challenging situations.

  • A background in frontend engineering or web technologies is beneficial, but not essential.

  • Prior Engineering Manager experience is advantageous, however we’re also open to firsttime managers with strong leadership capabilities.

  • Experience with AI-driven solutions or emerging technologies is a nicetohave.

  • We are especially keen to encourage applications from women, to help us improve gender balance across engineering.

Our Web Experience platform leverages modern web technologies including:

  • React, Next.js, TypeScript

Being an in-person business

We're at our best when we're close to customers, and for many of us at M&S, that means working in store every day.

To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected. It also means we can solve problems as soon as they arise, learn and grow as a team, build trust, and get closer to our colleagues.

Being in third-party brands, working on things M&S hasn’t done before… that plays to my sweet spot. I’ve worked in many organisations throughout my career, and it’s rare to see such cause and effect in your work. The way we’re structured means you’re encouraged to solve problems and you have the autonomy to make progress quickly.

I think all engineers just love solving puzzles and problems. At M&S, we’re constantly learning new things, whether it’s mastering Swift UI or understanding how customers interact with technology. But this is also a business that listens to engineers and values what we bring to the table. That’s different, believe me.

At M&S, we have Data Scientists, Analysts, and Technical Product Managers, who all share a genuine passion for harnessing data to improve people’s lives. And we’re in a unique position where we can actually help many different kinds of people, from our customers to our colleagues in store and in our support centre.
