How We Hire

Everyone is welcome at M&S. No exceptions. It’s your background, abilities and differences that make you, uniquely you. And when you’re part of M&S, that individuality has the potential to make waves.

About the role

This section tells you all you need to know about the position and its responsibilities, outlining everything we hope to see in a successful candidate.

All the details

At M&S, we’re transforming our online business through data-led decisions and sharper commercial performance. As an Online Commercial Assistant Manager, you’ll play a key role in turning complex data into clear, actionable insight that drives trading decisions and unlocks growth.

This is a highly collaborative role sitting at the heart of Online Performance & Planning, where you’ll work across Trading, Finance, Planning and Inventory teams to ensure performance is understood, risks are identified early, and opportunities are maximised.

This 12-month fixed-term contract is a brilliant opportunity for someone looking to deepen their commercial and analytical experience in a fast-paced digital environment.

What you’ll do

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Translate data into meaningful commercial insight, helping teams understand performance, risks and opportunities, and where to focus next
  • Create and shape insight packs, trading updates and materials for leadership forums, ensuring outputs are accurate and influence decisions at pace
  • Work closely with Planning teams to identify discrepancies in forecasts and highlight risks and opportunities
  • Compare Online forecasts with category and financial plans, ensuring alignment across assumptions and timelines
  • Analyse stock levels, stock cover and availability to optimise performance and reduce excess stock

Who you are

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Experience in a commercial, trading or online retail environment
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and generate clear insights
  • Confident communicator, able to present information clearly and credibly
  • Experience working with performance metrics such as sales, margin, stock and fulfilment (beneficial)
  • Familiarity with planning tools or systems (e.g. MFP, assortment planning) is a plus

What’s in it for you?

Working at M&S means being part of a business that’s evolving fast, with data and digital at the core of how we make decisions.

Here are just a few of the benefits:

  • 20% colleague discount across M&S products
  • Competitive holiday allowance with option to buy more
  • Discretionary bonus schemes
  • Pension and life assurance
  • Tailored development and progression opportunities
  • Wellbeing support and virtual GP access
  • One paid volunteering day a year

Everyone’s welcome

We’re committed to building diverse and inclusive teams where everyone can thrive. We value different perspectives and believe they help us make better decisions for our customers and colleagues.

If you need any support or adjustments during the recruitment process, please let us know.

Ways of working

Our teams work in a hybrid way, with time in the office to collaborate and connect, alongside flexibility to work from home.

Being an in-person business

We're at our best when we're close to customers, and for many of us at M&S, that means working in store every day.

To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected. It also means we can solve problems as soon as they arise, learn and grow as a team, build trust, and get closer to our colleagues.

I think all engineers just love solving puzzles and problems. At M&S, we’re constantly learning new things, whether it’s mastering Swift UI or understanding how customers interact with technology. But this is also a business that listens to engineers and values what we bring to the table. That’s different, believe me.

Being in third-party brands, working on things M&S hasn’t done before… that plays to my sweet spot. I’ve worked in many organisations throughout my career, and it’s rare to see such cause and effect in your work. The way we’re structured means you’re encouraged to solve problems and you have the autonomy to make progress quickly.

At M&S, we have Data Scientists, Analysts, and Technical Product Managers, who all share a genuine passion for harnessing data to improve people’s lives. And we’re in a unique position where we can actually help many different kinds of people, from our customers to our colleagues in store and in our support centre.
