The role at a glance:

Manages software engineers and cross functional software engineering teams

Key accountabilities and measures:

  • The software development manager is account for managing the overall technical quality of the output of agile development teams, including: functional quality, code quality, test coverage, technical dept and the overall quality of the system design and solution architecture of the systems being developed by the team
  • Consult product owners, and other business stakeholders, in the early stages of estimation and roadmap planning, both in terms of high-level estimates, feasibility, opportunity and general engineering advice
  • Minimise waste in the development process by driving an automation agenda where suitable
  • Influence and steer the ways of working within the team, ensuring the build process, environment provisioning process, branching strategies etc. all are optimised to the teams needs
  • Ensures quality isn’t comprised during busy periods
  • Collaborates with the scrum master to empower the team in all aspects of software delivery, and ensures that the team take accountability for their decisions
  • Guides the team during engineering sessions, ensuring they converge towards a solution that is compatible with the wider M&S architecture and the patterns we use, and in terms of managing the right level of design is applied to the problem at hand
  • Manage the engineering process, providing mentorship and guidance to team members who are stuck
  • Ensures that the engineering team is correctly balanced, and deal with any skill gaps, key person decencies and such in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with other engineering managers, to ensure maximum synergy between our development teams. Both from a tooling and a way of working perspective
  • Take ownership of various technology initiatives, driven by software engineering, and manage their delivery
  • Be hands on as and when required. Need to be able to drive a spike, create a small proof of concept or a small auxiliary technical task as and when required
  • Recruiting and onboarding new engineers into the team
  • Line manage all the engineers in the team, overseeing and evaluating their work.
  • Do regular 1-2-1 to manage and guide both performance and personal development
  • Help to create, and manage to, both personal and professional objectives for the engineers in your team
  • Create relevant personal development plans for your engineers, and help them achieve it

Key skills:

  • Degree in computer science or related field
  • Must have a background as a software engineering background. Strong candidates will have years of experience implanting systems in many different technologies, and will have some level of experience across the stack, from front-end to backend system
  • Demonstrable experience of hiring and managing a team of highly skilled software engineers, to deliver a best of class software product under non-trivial NFRs
  • Have a strong understanding of system design and software architecture. Must be able to engage in meaningful conversations with engineers, architects and the head of software engineering in terms of how we should design systems
  • Must have a strong understanding of object-oriented design and design patterns, and how and when they should be implemented
  • Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, including SCM, build configuration and processes, code quality, testing practices and operations
  • Experienced in collaborating with other technical teams, product owner and senior management, showing strong experience in collaborating to define, design, develop, deliver and support complicated software
  • Strong understanding of both test-driven development and developer driven testing in general
  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders at all levels and appropriately managing expectations
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong people management skill, able to get the best out of colleagues you manage
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Able to forge strong bonds with key stakeholders and speak at different levels of technical understanding
  • Able to balance large workloads and prioritise effectively
  • A strong self-starter with high attention to detail
  • Willing to travel occasionally
