OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
Distribution is largely about getting our wealth of products to where they need to be, when they need to be there. This requires focused, committed people to make it happen. Managing and motivating them is where you come in.
As part of our Operations Management team, you’ll build solid working relationships with your team, drive their performance and share ideas about how to do things better. All the while, you’ll help to create an inclusive culture that’s distinctly M&S.
Ultimately, our customers will judge us on the speed, quality and accuracy of our service. Our success depends upon the capable hands of our effective Operations teams.
Being on the frontline delivering our customer promise calls for flexibility, resilience and tenacity. It means being able to think on your feet and react to changes as they happen. Whether it’s anticipating bottlenecks or responding to fluctuations in demand, you adapt effortlessly and work as one team to get the job done. And as our online business continues to grow, you’ll play a vital role in making sure our distribution operation continues to improve and develop.
Distribution is largely about getting our online customer orders ready for shipping – so products are where they need to be, when they need to be there. This requires focused, committed people to make it happen. Leading and motivating them is where you come in. As part of our Operations Management team, you’ll lead and engage your teams, driving their performance, sharing ideas about how to do things better; celebrating success and giving recognition. All the while, you’ll help to create a safe and inclusive culture that’s distinctly M&S.
Here’s some more detail around what each of these roles does – so you know where you’ll best fit in.
Team Managers
You’re a natural and inspiring people manager - leading a large team of operatives, giving them the support and development they need to deliver consistently high standards of performance and quality. You’ll ensure day-to-day processes in your department are well executed and all operational issues are in hand to meet and exceed our customer and business requirements.
By showing the right leadership behaviours and being visible, you’ll motivate everyone to perform at their best and deliver best in class service performance.
Shift and Operations Management
Shift and Operations Management is all about getting our products to where they need to be, when they need to be there. It may sound straightforward but when you’re taking control of an entire chamber in our distribution operation its quite a responsibility. So you’ll need to be up for the challenge! You will set the direction of our operation; maximising performance, leading by example and having the resilience to cope with any change that comes your way. When there’s a change in demand, you’ll make sure we utilise the resources we have to meet the challenge accordingly.
Most of all though, it’s about people. You’ll help your teams recognise the value and significance of what they do – to our business, our customers and to their individual development and career goals. By motivating, training and developing your people, you’ll help them be their best, and give them the direction they need to establish a rewarding future.
Flow
Our Castle Donington site is fully mechanised including automated storage and retrieval systems, along with sophisticated warehouse control systems and warehouse management systems to guarantee delivery accuracy.
Of course, great technology is vital to our operations – but it wouldn’t amount to much without the right people there to monitor and control it.
This is where our Flow team comes into its own – a team of highly technical, systems orientated people. Together, they oversee everything from system availability and efficiency to managing work flows and potential maintenance issues that may cause downtime. Close liaison with the Shift Operations and Engineering teams are therefore essential.
